Back pain has all kinds of causes and no two people have quite the same experience with it, but one thing’s for certain: you shouldn’t have to put up with it. When most people think of chiropractic, the first thing that comes to mind is non-surgical treatment for back pain. At the East Rockaway and New York City offices of Dr. Brian Katz, we provide a wide range of chiropractic services for musculoskeletal disorders, helping people to regain function and comfort with minimal invasiveness and risk. Because there are so many different causes of back pain, we offer patients several treatment options, and will work with them to help them make an informed choice they feel confident in.
The spinal column is a complicated network of bones and supportive soft tissues. Not only is it responsible for bearing a lot of weight, but the nerves that lead to the rest of the body emerge from it at various points. Swelling in tissues surrounding the column or displacement of its vertebrae can compress nerves at their point of origin, resulting in shocks, tingles, or numbness traveling along those nerves’ length and interfering with their ability to accurately relay messages between the brain and body. But even when a nerve isn’t being compressed, wear to soft tissues and partial dislocations, which we call subluxations, can result in soreness. Although some injuries come about suddenly through recognizable events such as a car accident, back pain can also be caused by long-term overuse and instability, which would also make a patient more vulnerable to sudden injuries in contexts such as sports.
The basic concept of chiropractic is to realign the body to prevent further strain and interference in nerve communication, putting the body in the optimal position to heal itself. Dr. Katz has over 39 years worth of experience diagnosing and treating back pain, and our offices in East Rockaway and New YOrk City both include modern equipment for delivering complementary services. Spinal adjustments are a chiropractors’ signature way of realigning subluxated tissues, removing nerve impingements, and taking pressure off the cartilage and spinal discs cushioning the vertebrae. For patients experiencing degeneration in their spinal discs, we also offer decompression therapy. For people with swollen soft tissues, we offer electric muscle stimulation and low level laser therapy, both of which promote blood flow to provide damaged tissues with the nutrients they need to rebuild. Dr. Katz will also coach patients in therapeutic exercises and more efficient postures to improve their core muscle strength, providing their spinal columns with more support and making them less vulnerable to overuse injuries in the future.
